With Stéphane Geyres' book with the questioning title - Liberté Manifeste - we hardly run any risks. Things are clear, the goals are not concealed, the scientific dimension is respected, the university rules are thrown overboard when they are considered to be providers of heaviness.
In other words, the author has a pretension that is rather rare among French intellectuals, since he writes to be read! This insolence does not stop there, since a common thread, Freedom, runs through each of the chapters. Stéphane Geyres' book is short, dense, hard-hitting. It shakes up, questions, forces reflection. Unperturbed, he always, again, tirelessly brings us back to the only issue by which everything must be measured, gauged, judged, weighed, that is to say, according to him, the criterion of Freedom.
Finally, what else can we expect and hope from a book on the humanities, if not to invite reflection? A fine exercise for which we must be grateful to the author and to those who, by playing the role of Candide, pushed the author to his ultimate limits. May all three be thanked, and I hope and wish, read in abundance.
